How a label is born: Corne Riserva Case History

There are many ways to create a design project, and in terms of style the more flexible the better. As for the methodology instead, we think that a well-defined process is very useful. Not a cage for ideas but a useful track to chase the best ones.

In this article we’re going back together with the Corne label design, a premium wine presented in 2018, trying to tell you about our methodology. Step by step, here’s how we got there:

Who and Why

Le Corne is a winery in Bergamo, with whom we worked since their biological conversion (2016, more or less). The company is making a name for itself at national level, but in the meantime it is well known in our region thanks to cutting-edge products – such as Vento Fermo Without Sulfites – and collectible reserves – such as Pinot Nero Divenire 1818 (of which you find some shots here).

In 2018 the company had plans to present their first Riserva: a blend of Merlot and Cabernet, vintage 2015. This reserve would be called “Corne”.

Where to start

In this case we had already defined a name and we knew the client, so for this step it was enough to summarize.

– Product name: “Corne” is the name of the typical rock found in the subsoil
– Production area: Bergamo. Grumello del monte.
– Vines: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
– Plus: Reserve
– Bottle: Burgundy, dark glass
– Company logo: a tower

However, an hint was “discovered” by connecting dots: music. One of their wines, Divenire, is dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti, the famous composer of Bergamo. The company oenologist is a fan of lyric opera music.

Sometimes a technical choice can be read as an artwork: is the case of the “rock amphitheater” (as they call it at the winery) which stands at the foot of the vineyard. This amphitheater was built by reusing the stones recovered from the reclamation with the aim of facilitating the outflow of the rains. So it was a technical choice, which however seems to have the objective of creating a stage for the protagonist of the cellar: the vineyard.

In searching for “musicality” we first thought about the signs of music (pentagram, notes, keys …) but then decided to follow the famous composer Donizetti and see where he would take us. For the uninitiated, the city theater of Bergamo is entitled as the composer. We immediately understood that the key was in that theater.

When the story behind the project is solid, we are ready to move from the creative phase to the realization.

We were looking for a black and smooth paper, which could create a good contrast with the light color and the rough effect that the stones should have had. We found the perfect Arconvert paper “Nero Inspira Mistero”.

Before creating the executive for printing, it is essential to define printing materials and techniques. At this stage, collaborating with the printer is very important: in this case, San Faustino Group.
